Stories of abuse by psychiatrists

A 15 year old girl is bashed and gang raped. In a distressed state she reports this rape to the police. The police become concerned for her mental state and take her to the local mental hospital. There she is locked up and examined and declared mentally ill. An Involuntary Treatment Order is made and she is forcibly drugged. After two weeks she is allowed to go home and the forced treatment continues at home. She finds studying at school impossible and goes from having been a high rating student to a fail student. The drug causes her to be unable to think and learn. She becomes depressed, doesn’t eat properly and is a problem for her parents. The psychiatrists tell the Police to drop the investigation as it will interfere with her treatment. The girl is devastated and becomes suicidal with lack of motivation and purpose. The parent’s solicitors make an application to the Mental Health Review Tribunal and detail how the treatment has been affecting their daughter but the application fails and the forced treatment continues. Her life as it should have been is ruined by the forced treatment by her psychiatrist.

A middle aged man is being annoyed by his neighbour’s loud drug parties which have been going on for months. One night he asks the neighbours to please keep the noise down. He is abused, shoved, knocked over and threatened so he calls the Police. The police see him in a distressed state and take him to the Mental Hospital. He is locked up, examined and found to be mentally ill and given an Involuntary Treatment Order. After 3 weeks he is allowed to go home but has to report once a month for an injection. The treatment changes his personality for the worse; he becomes depressed and loses his job. After 4 months his wife has had it with him and finds a boy friend, changes the locks on the house and kicks him out. With no place to go this middle aged man begins living in his car on the street and accepting charity, food and help.

An elderly gentleman has an epileptic fit in a shop. The shopkeeper, not knowing what to do, calls the Police who take him to the local mental hospital. There he is locked up and examined. He gets angry with this treatment and is declared mentally ill and has an Involuntary Treatment Order made against him. His forced treatment consists of drugs and Electric Shock Treatment also known as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). After 4 months he no longer recognises his grand children and gets lost easily. He is depressed and stigmatised by the label of being mentally ill. He gives up on his hobbies and friends and mopes around the house very unhappy and suicidal. His family try to get him off the treatment but all his applications to the Mental Health Tribunal and Mental Health Court fail. Psychiatrists' opinions are treated as fact and acted on accordingly. The psychiatrist has ruined his life.

A middle aged man is involved in a family feud over an estate while the mother is still alive and this feud should not be happening. Both he and his mother are abused, have death threats made against them, get robbed, get maligned by the local community, get poisoned, he gets assaulted, she has a stroke from the stress and poison and spends 2.5 months recovering in hospital, Applications are made to the VCAT Guardianship Tribunal. They are an abuse of the processes of that tribunal and fail. The man and his mother escape to Queensland. After so much abuse he has high alert expecting another attack and seeks help from a psychiatrist. He is declared mentally ill and an Involuntary Treatment Order is made. He is locked up in the mental hospital for 38 days, forcibly drugged to a stupor to stop his thinking and suffers an attempted indoctrination that his sister is good and didn’t cause him any problems and he should mend fences with his family and so forth. His girlfriend leaves him; his mother is in a nursing home. He is still devastated by what has happened to him and has to work out how to deal with the many problems these events caused all by himself. A crisis management plan is prepared for him by the psychiatrist which means that when his mother dies or if his sister tells the psychiatrist a malicious story about him the police will be sent after him and he will be locked up and drugged again. He has to live in fear of the psychiatrist and his family's malice for the rest of his life. Applications are made under FOI but the information upon which his treatment is based is refused him. His applications to the Mental Health Tribunal and Mental Health Court all fail.

A man aged in his twenties has an accident about twenty years ago which cause head injuries. He never seems to recover from the injury and seeks the help of a psychiatrist. He gets diagnosed with schizophrenia and is prescribed tranquilizers. He seeks another opinion and is referred by the first psychiatrist to another psychiatrist along with his file. The second Psychiatrist makes the same diagnosis. The second psychiatrist adds Electric Shock Treatment to his treatment regime. After three years he still has a problem. He sees another psychiatrist without a referral from the first psychiatrist who says he does not have schizophrenia and he is taken off the drugs. He spends three months in the long term mental hospital recovering from the drug treatment and a cat scan reveals he has massive brain atrophy. The prescribed tranquilizer is known to kill brain cells and has been killing his brain cells. Another doctor diagnoses him with sleep apnoea. His snoring is causing him breathing difficulties when he sleeps and his brain is not getting enough oxygen. He changes his sleeping posture and loses weight and is cured. Now he only has the brain damage caused by the drugs which now cause him to be disabled. He was disabled by unnecessary psychiatric treatment. Under the new Mental Health Act an Involuntary Treatment Order would have been made and he would never have got off the incorrectly prescribed drug and would probably now be deceased due to the treatment.
