More on Harry Home page

Harry's favourite horse was State Taj which won the Hong Kong International Cup. 1994 was the year the race attained Gr.2 status and marked the beginning of an international dominance with invitations extended to the world's best. This was when State Taj became the first Australian-trained winner in Hong Kong and a year later the first Japanese victor obliged in the form of Fujiyama Kenzan.

The jockey was Damien Oliver, who in 2001 was 29, from Western Australia, burst on the scene in Victoria in the late 1980s as a 16-year-old apprentice on loan to leading Melbourne trainer Lee Freedman. By the time he had finished his apprenticeship, Oliver had ridden a record 18 Group 1 victories, the most by any Australian apprentice. The Freedman-Oliver partnership hit a peak when he rode the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup double on Doriemus in 1995. The Caulfield Cup has become a significant race for Oliver as he has also won it in 1992, '94 and '99. This year he won his third Cox Plate on Northerly. Big race wins in Hong Kong include the Hong Kong Sprint last year on Falvelon, the Hong Kong Cup on State Taj in 1994.

Harry was an excellent judge of animals. He had a herd of Hereford angus cross and used a carefully selected angus bull to produce a very strong fast growing black angus calf in his farming business. When he was dairy farming over 30 years he bred Friesian cross dairy cows that produced on average five gallons a day and his best produced nine gallons a day. He was using this skill to breed his race horses.

The breeding of Harry's horses follows:-

He carefully chose his stallions:

55-MVRC WS Cox Plate (Taj Rossi)
 57-VRC Victorian Derby (Taj Rossi)
58-VRC George Adams H'cap (Taj Rossi)

Taj Rossi and Red Anchor strolled home a week after the Cox Plate to win the Victoria Derby

Taj Rossi was unique for a Cox Plate winner in that he emerged as a late two-year-old in June, winning over 1400 metres, before tackling the Moonee Valley Stakes and Caulfield Guineas.

Bart Cummings was the last trainer to have successive AAMI Derby victories with Dayana in 1972 and Taj Rossi in 1973,

Regal Classic

One of Regal Classic’s  strong points is the respect his daughters get at the sales ring. In 2001 daughters of Regal Classic sold as Broodmares or Broodmare Prospects averaged over $85,000. Makes you want to race that nice filly you have by Regal doesn't it?

Vice Regent

Casey-Cardinia Casey Cardinia Library Corporation Endeavour Hills, Hampton Park, Cranbourne, Doveton, Pakenham The imposing chestnut son of Northern Dancer, out of Victoria Regina, was Canada's leading sire for 13 years. Vice Regent has sired more than 400 foals, with 82 per cent of them starting. His stakes winners numbered more than 60.

Vice Regent was constantly under scrutiny when he arrived at the racetrack. After all, he was a handsome full-brother to Viceregal, who was named Champion Two-Year Old Colt in Canada in 1968. After five races, two of which he won, Vice Regent was retired.

Ten years after Vice Regent was retired, his son, Deputy Minister, was named North America's top Two-Year-Old Colt in Canada in 1968. After five races, two of which he won, Vice Regent was retired.

Ten years after Vice Regent was retired, his son, Deputy Minister, was named North America's top Two Year Old Colt. Naturally, he was Canada's Champion Juvenile and Horse-of-the-Year.

Ruling Angel, a daughter of Vice Regent, was named Horse-of-the Year in 1986 after a brilliant two-year-old career, when she was voted Champion Two-Year-Old Filly.

Deceit Dancer, a flashy chestnut like her sire, was a Two-year-Old Filly Champion in Canada in 1984, while Bessarabian, who earned $1,032,640 during her career, was voted Champion Older Mare in Canada. Christy's Mount, a winner of 13 races, also was named a Champion Older Mare in Canada, too.

Vice Regent's progeny have proven adept at sprinting a routing and have been successful on dirt and grass. In fact, Fraud Squad, his son, was noted Canada's Top Sprinter in 1983, while his daughter, Bounding Away, was voted Canada's Champion Older Grass horse in 1984.

In 1988, Vice Regent was represented by Canada's top two three-year-old colts, Regal Classic and Regal Intention. Regal Intention won the Queen's Plate, relegating his stablemate, Regal Classic, to second. Regal Classic, in turn, defeated Regal Intention in the Prince of Wales, then, a grandson, King's Deputy, won the Breeders' Stakes, thus providing a Vice Regent sweep of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Vice Regent joins his illustrious sire, Northern Dancer, and his son, Deputy Minister, in The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
