Techniques of Influence.

Learn to recognise when you are being manipulated

Techniques of persuasion
1. Persuasion attempts to win "the heart and mind" of the target. Thus persuasion must induce attitude change, which entails affective (emotion-based) change. Although persuasion is more difficult to induce, its effects last longer because the target actually accepts and internalizes the advocacy.
2. The code of Reciprocity. Individuals feel obliged to repay in kind.
3. One good deed invites another. The concession of retreating to a smaller request after a the rejection of a large request has higher probability of acceptance than the request by itself.
4. Consistency – the desire to be and appear consistent. By getting a student to agree to doing something increases the chances that the student will do that something.
5. Social validation – one fundamental way we decide what to do in a situation is to look at what others are doing. If many are doing it we will be more likely to do it.
6. Liking – People prefer to say yes to those they like.
7. Authority – Compliance increases significantly in the presence of authority. Symbols of authority such as a tie, a name badge, an emblem can make a big difference.
8. Scarcity – perceived scarcity increases perceived value, scarce information that is exclusive is more persuasive.
9. Expectation – Create expectation then assume and act accordingly.
